Saarbrücken

Die Saarbrücker "Skyline"

The capital of the Saarland is the economic, cultural and political centre. Goethe wrote after his (horse) ride from Strasbourg to Saarbrücken:

"We arrived at Saarbrücken via Saargemünd, and this small residence was a bright point in a rocky, forested countryside. The town, small and hilly, but well endowed by the last prince, makes at once a pleasant impression …"

Quite apart from the fact that Saarbrücken has now grown to be a modern university town with 200,000 inhabitants, motorways, city and suburban railway and airport, it is even today a manageable city nestling between wooded hills and greenery. Virtually nothing can be seen any more of smoking chimneys , the iron and steel industry and mines! - Saarbrücken has become a lively city with sympathetically designed pedestrian zones and a shopping mile which one must seek far and wide to find its equal, and not only because of the attractive shops!

Here, everybody senses the special savoir-vivre of the inhabitants and an international flair, thanks to the many visitors, especially from France close to the border.
